Jamul, California
Jamul is an unincorporated community in San Diego County. As of a 2000 census, Jamul had a population of 5,920. There was some controversy in Jamul in 1999 when the Tipai Band of Kumeyaay Indians announced their intentions to open a new hotel and casino on six acres of sovereign land. Proponents of the plan emphasized increased revenue for the state and tribe as well as the creation of jobs. Opponents contended that the casino would put a strain on police and fire services, water supply, and the community’s image. Citizens of Jamul are still in contention over this issue but an agreement has supposedly been made between CalTrans and the Jamul Indian Tribe. The estimate of when the project could be completed is 2014.
Jamul is located near the East County Regional Center on 250 East Main Street in El Cajon. This courthouse hears civil, criminal, family and juvenile dependency cases. There is also a probate court location on 1409 Fourth Ave.
