Renowned for its open-mindedness to the LGBT community in San Diego, Hillcrest is a community northwest of Balboa Park. One of the older suburbs in San Diego, Hillcrest is well known for its locally owned bars, cafes, and restaurants, many of which are walking distance from residential areas. Hillcrest can be reached via the 163, and is minutes outside of downtown San Diego to the south. Although lack of parking in Hillcrest has become an issue in recent years, efforts are currently being made to improve this situation.
